Algal blooms modulate organic matter remineralization in freshwater sediments: A new insight on priming effect

چکیده

This study provides a novel insight into the degradation of sediment organic matter (SOM) regulated by algae-derived (AOM) based on priming effect. We tracked dynamics SOM mineralization products and pathways, together with effects (PE) using compound-specific stable isotope (?13C) technique following addition low- high-density algal debris in sediments. found that increased total carbon oxidation rate, resulted denitrification methanogenesis-dominated mineralization. While iron reduction sulphate played important roles early period accumulation. Total rate anaerobic rates (Ranaerobic) were higher amended treatments compared control. Analysis indicated had positive PE mineralization, which caused an intensified initial phase over 80% dissolved inorganic deriving from degradation. deduced effect (RTCOR-PE) was similar to Ranaerobic, further indicating critical source end products. These findings deviate causal focus decomposition AOM, confirm accumulation AOM as facilitator Our offers empirical evidences advance traditional view

Negative Priming Effect on Organic Matter Mineralisation in NE Atlantic Slope Sediments

The priming effect (PE) is a complex phenomenon which describes a modification (acceleration or retardation) in the mineralisation rate of refractory organic matter (OM) following inputs of labile material. PEs are well-studied in terrestrial ecosystems owing to their potential importance in the evolution of soil carbon stocks but have been largely ignored in aquatic systems despite the fact th...

A meta - analysis on pyrogenic organic matter induced priming effect

Pyrogenic organic matter (PyOM) is considered an important soil carbon (C) sink. However, there are evidences that its addition to soil may induce a priming effect (PE) thus influencing its C abatement potential. The direction, the size and the mechanisms responsible for PyOM induced PE are far from being understood. We collected approximately 650 data points from 18 studies to analyse the char...

Role of organic matter, clay, and iron contents in the sorption of oxytetracycline on river sediments

Background: Oxytetracycline (OTC) is a widely-used antibiotic; metabolism studies indicate only partial assimilation of it inside the body. Traditional wastewater treatment plants cannot remove OTC, and this results in the release of considerable amounts of the drug into aquatic environments. There is much concern over the role of residual antibiotics in the development of new generations of ba...

Organic Carbon and Organic Matter Levels in Sediments of the Strait of Hormoz, the Persian Gulf

Total organic carbon has a major influence on both the chemical and biological processesthat take place in sediments. Algal bloom is one of the organic carbon levels in aquatic ecosystems. In 2009 algal bloom occurred in the Hormozgan province and prolonged for months, which finally setteled down in 2010. In this study the variations of total organic carbon (TOC), organic matter (TOM) and tot...
